Shirt Fabric Types: Which Weave to Buy for Suits, Office or Heat

Most dress shirts are cotton, but the weave changes how the shirt looks, how much it wrinkles, how warm it feels and how formal it reads. The four weaves to know are poplin, twill, oxford and pinpoint. Here’s what each one is and when to choose it.

Poplin

Poplin, often called broadcloth in the US, is a tight, plain weave that makes a smooth, light and crisp shirt. It’s the classic choice under a suit and tie, and it’s cool in warm weather. The downside: it shows wrinkles and can look slightly sheer in white. A poplin shirt is a smart first dress shirt if you mostly wear suits.

Twill

Twill has fine diagonal lines in the weave, which make it soft, drapey and better at hiding wrinkles than poplin. It’s a popular base for non-iron shirts; see our non-iron guide. Herringbone is a twill that reverses direction to form a V pattern.

Oxford and pinpoint

Oxford cloth uses a basketweave, so it’s thicker and more textured. It’s the fabric behind the classic button-down, the OCBD. Pinpoint oxford uses finer yarns for a smoother, dressier shirt that still has a little texture. Royal oxford is finer still with a slight sheen. Read our full oxford shirt guide.

Oxford vs poplin: which should you buy?

  • Mostly suits and ties: poplin or fine twill.
  • Mostly business casual: oxford or pinpoint.
  • Hot climate: poplin or end-on-end.
  • Hate ironing: twill, ideally non-iron.

Fiber: cotton, blends and linen

  • 100% cotton: breathable and comfortable. Long-staple cottons such as Egyptian, Pima or Supima feel smoother and tend to pill less.
  • Cotton with a little elastane: stretch for comfort, popular in slim and athletic fits.
  • Cotton and polyester blends: wrinkle less and cost less, but breathe less.
  • Linen: very breathable, wrinkles easily. Best for summer and casual events.

What thread count and ply mean

Shirt makers sometimes list a number like 100s or 120s, which describes how fine the yarn is: higher means finer and smoother, but also more delicate. Two-ply means each thread is two yarns twisted together, which usually feels more substantial. Neither number tells you everything, so treat them as hints, not guarantees.

Care by fabric

Poplin and fine fabrics need a press after washing; here’s how to iron a dress shirt. Linen irons best while slightly damp. Cotton can shrink in a hot dryer, so tumble dry low or hang. For stains, see how to remove sweat stains.

Quick answers

What is the difference between oxford and poplin?

Poplin is a smooth, tight plain weave that looks crisp and formal. Oxford uses a basketweave, so it’s thicker, softer and textured, and looks more casual.

What is a poplin shirt?

A poplin shirt is made from a tightly woven, smooth, lightweight fabric, usually cotton. It’s one of the most common dress shirt fabrics and is also called broadcloth in the US.

Which shirt fabric wrinkles least?

Twill generally hides wrinkles better than poplin, and non-iron treated cotton or cotton blends with some polyester resist wrinkles the most.

What is the best shirt fabric for hot weather?

Lightweight, breathable weaves such as poplin, end-on-end, voile and linen or linen blends. Heavier weaves like flannel and oxford feel warmer.

What does two-ply mean?

Two-ply means each thread is made of two yarns twisted together. Two-ply cotton tends to feel more substantial and hold up well, though weave and yarn quality matter as much.
