Tuxedo Shirt Guide: Get the Collar, Front and Cuffs Right for Black Tie

A tuxedo shirt is a white formal shirt made to wear with a tuxedo at black tie events. It differs from a regular dress shirt in three places: the collar, the front and the cuffs. Get those three right, plus the fit, and you’ll look correct at any black tie wedding, gala or formal dinner.

A bow tie puts your collar on display. Get your collar and sleeve size from the size calculator so it closes with one finger of room.

Collar: turndown or wing

  • Turndown collar: looks like a regular dress shirt collar, usually a spread. It’s the modern standard for black tie and works with every bow tie.
  • Wing collar: a short standing band with small points that fold out. It’s traditional and is the expected collar for white tie. With black tie it’s an acceptable, more old-fashioned choice.

More on collars in our collar types guide.

Front: pleated, bib or plain

  • Pleated front: narrow vertical pleats on each side of the buttons. The most common rental-style tuxedo shirt.
  • Bib front: a panel of stiffer fabric, often marcella or piqué. Classic and crisp.
  • Plain front: clean and modern.

Many tuxedo shirts use shirt studs instead of buttons, or a fly front (hidden placket) that covers the buttons entirely. Both look cleaner than ordinary buttons.

Cuffs: French cuffs and cufflinks

Most tuxedo shirts have French cuffs, which fold back and close with cufflinks. Choose simple links that match your studs. Our French cuff guide shows how to put them on.

Fit

A tuxedo jacket and bow tie draw the eye to your collar and cuffs, so fit there is everything. The collar should close with one finger of room so the bow tie sits neatly. About a quarter to a half inch of cuff should show past the jacket sleeve. Get your numbers with the size calculator and check the size chart. A shirt with a too-long body bunches under a cummerbund or waistcoat, so pick a fit that suits your build from the fit guide.

When to wear one

  • Black tie: required with the tuxedo.
  • Black tie optional: if you wear a tuxedo. With a dark suit, a white dress shirt is fine. See our wedding attire guide.
  • White tie: needs a wing collar shirt with a stiff front, worn with a tailcoat.
  • Cocktail or semi-formal: no. A regular dress shirt is correct. See cocktail attire.

Next step: find your collar and sleeve size, then compare brands that sell it.

Where to buy a tuxedo shirt and studs

Buy the shirt in your collar and sleeve size, and get studs and cufflinks as a matching set so the metals agree. Check that the listing gives collar and sleeve sizes, not just S, M and L.

Quick answers

What is the difference between a tuxedo shirt and a dress shirt?

A tuxedo shirt is made for black tie. It usually has French cuffs, holes for studs instead of regular buttons or a hidden placket, and often a pleated or bib front. A dress shirt has regular buttons and barrel cuffs and is meant for suits.

Can I wear a regular dress shirt with a tuxedo?

You can, and plenty of men do, especially with a plain white shirt and a turndown collar. It’s less traditional than a tuxedo shirt but far better than a poorly fitting one.

Should I wear a wing collar or a turndown collar?

A turndown collar is the modern default for black tie. Wing collars are more traditional and are expected with white tie. With black tie, either is acceptable.

Do I need cufflinks for a tuxedo shirt?

Most tuxedo shirts have French cuffs, so yes. Simple silver, gold, black onyx or mother-of-pearl links work best. See our French cuff guide for how to put them on.

What color should a tuxedo shirt be?

White. Ivory and other colors are occasional fashion choices, but white is the traditional and safest choice for black tie.
